Types of Academic Accommodations
The following is a partial list of academic accommodations that a students may be qualified to receive, depending the specific nature of their disabilities. All academic accommodations are determined on a case by case basis.
Extended time for exams
Students may receive additional time (up to 100%) to complete their exams.
Please refer to our testing procedures for additional information.
Alternate/quiet exam setting
Students may be eligible to take tests in an alternate setting with fewer distractions.
The SSC has a testing room available.
Use of a computer for tests
Students who qualify may use a computer to take essay exams.
The SSC owns computers for student use in the testing room.
Written materials in an alternate format
The SSC can obtain electronic versions of textbooks for students who require them.
If approved for this accommodation, students are responsible for completing the Alternate Format Textbook Request Form prior to the start of the semester. It can take up to two weeks to process requests.
Students may also choose to independently use resources such as Learning Ally or Bookshare to obtain alternate formats.
Text to Speech and/or Speech to Text
Students may use Text to Speech on exams to read aloud questions.
Students may use Speech to Text to scribe exams.
Braille
Handouts, tests, etc., may be Brailled for students who are visually impaired.
Interpreters
Sign language interpreters may be provided.
Captioning
The SSC will work with faculty to ensure course content is captioned as needed.
Priority registration
Some students may qualify to pre-register for courses.
Use of a technical aid during an exam
Technical aids may include, but are not limited to, a calculator, dictionary, or spell-checker.
Reduced course load
Some students may carry less than the recommended minimum course load and still be considered full time for Providence College purposes. Requests for a reduced course load must be submitted by the end of the add/drop period, according to the Providence College Academic Calendar.
