Faculty Resources and Support
In addition to peer tutoring services for students, the Writing Center offers several programs to support faculty in their teaching of writing, as well as their own scholarly pursuits. A brief description of these programs is provided below. Faculty members are invited to contact the Writing Center for additional information.
Informational Class Visits
Writing Center representatives are available to deliver 10-15 minute overviews of our policies, programs, and resources. These short presentations are delivered upon faculty request and provide students with everything they need to know about how the Writing Center can support them.
Skill Workshops for Students
Members of our staff can also deliver workshops that are tailor-made to address the needs of students in particular courses. These workshops are particularly effective when topics are tied directly to an assignment. Workshops may be delivered during class meetings or at another time that works well for students.
The Writing Center staff is always in the process of developing tools (e.g., tip sheets, reference guides) to support faculty in their teaching of writing. Some of these tools are discipline-specific, while others are designed for more general use across subject areas. To access our current “tool bag,” click here.
Writing Fellows Program
Undergraduate writing fellows are assigned to work with students in a particular class on an ongoing basis. By offering feedback at various stages of the process, fellows help to reinforce the goals of writing across the curriculum and resist the product-oriented thinking that many students bring to their writing assignments.
Writing Pedagogy Workshops
In collaboration with the English Department and the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Writing Center offers a series of workshops that focus on discrete aspects of writing instruction. Topics include, but are not limited to, assignment design, evaluation/response techniques, and strategies to facilitate the writing process. Each session typically lasts an hour and includes a complimentary lunch. The schedule for these workshops is available on the Writing Center Events page.
Faculty Writers’ Retreat
Each summer, the Writing Center brings a small group of faculty together for a multi-day writing retreat. This event gives faculty from across disciplines an opportunity to advance scholarly projects, network with fellow academics, and share techniques to maximize their productivity. Throughout the retreat, support for writing and research are provided by Writing Center and Library staff. The retreat has not only contributed to the advancement of several publications; it has given faculty from across disciplines a forum to share their work and support one another in their pursuit of scholarly excellence. With support from the Office of Sponsored Projects and Research, cohorts often continue working together during the academic year. Details regarding this year’s retreat are available on the Writing Center Events page.
