Preparing for Your Tutoring Session
Tutoring sessions are meant to serve as supplements to class lectures, not substitutes. Good class notes are essential for a tutor to determine how a professor prioritizes his or her material, in order to help you prepare for an exam or for doing your homework when the session is over. Organization and preparedness will allow you to get the most out of your session.
Tutoring appointments can be made up to two weeks in advance of the session; appointments tend to fill up quickly, especially before exams, so planning ahead will give you the best chance to get the appointment time you want.
Be punctual and prepared:
Appointments are one hour long, and therefore it is important that you arrive on time so you can take advantage of the entire session. Make sure to bring all necessary items (textbook, class notes, assignment, calculator, etc.) to your appointment to ensure you get the most out of your session. It may also be helpful to review your notes and attempt any homework questions or assignments prior to the session so that you can prepare specific questions for your tutor. Because you made the appointment, it is you who directs the process of the session. The more specific your purpose, the more productive you and your tutor can be.
Be an active member of the session:
Because tutors are not teachers, tutoring sessions are intended to be an active dialog between tutors and tutees. They have successfully finished your course and so can talk about it with you and share study skills and insights that will help you be successful as well. Tutors know they may not actually DO your assigned work for you. This is your time to ask questions or ask for clarification if you still don’t understand. Plan ahead for how you want to allocate your time during your session to ensure you receive the proper assistance.
